The DMA Brexit Briefing

As part of the DMA’s role in keeping our members abreast of legislation and political issues, we give regular legal updates. These are well attended by our members who are, of course, always keen to be at the forefront of legal advances.

Today, we hosted a special Brexit Briefing, which discussed the wider Brexit landscape and the issues that directly affect the data and marketing industry.

Hosted by DMA CEO, Chris Combemale, the briefing was well received by the 70+ members who attended.

First, external affairs executive, Michael Sturrock, gave a history of the EU-UK relationship (stretching back to 1948… don’t tell us we’re not thorough!) and a rundown of the events that led us to where we are today.

Next, external affairs manager, Zach Thornton, presented on the various Brexit deals and the implications for the data and marketing industry. You can read the DMA’s position on the Chequers deal, Canada+ and no-deal, here.

The DMA’s new head of legal, Asli Yildiz, went into depth about the legal options that companies can use to continue the transfer of personal data post-Brexit.

In the Q&A session, the DMA was pleased to be joined by a representative from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, who gave the government’s (positive) view on the prospects of achieving a good Brexit deal on data.

Needless to say, the event was an informative and entertaining one. While the road ahead may be uncertain, the DMA’s support in guiding you through the legal and political wilderness is steadfast
