Glossary

These pages are provided to help you understand the terminology used within DMA List Manager.
List Status
Select the most relevant status for your list. Only one option can be ticked.
  • Existing - List is established within the market
  • New to the market - List is completely new to the market
  • Relaunch - List was removed from the market and is now being reintroduced
  • Supplier change - It is an existing list but the list provider has changed
LWR No.
The List Warranty Register (LWR) is a central database of list owner and list user warranties. By signing a warranty the signatory agrees to comply with the Direct Marketing Code of Practice and in case of a complaint to be bound by the decisions of the DM Commission. For further information on the LWR call 020 7291 3340.

The DMA recommends that all lists be registered with the LWR.

Coverage
Geographic coverage. You can select:
  • UK
  • International and one option from the country dropdown list
  • UK and International
Profile
Where/how was the list data captured?
  • Compiled - Lists compiled from sources not specified below
  • Customer - A company's existing customer base
  • Subscription - People who subscribe to a catalogue, service, association etc.
  • Companies house - Collected from companies house
  • Publishers - Magazine recipients
  • Conferences - Conference attendees
  • Directories - Lists compiled from directory entries
Size
Detail relating to the size of list.
  • Universal - Total number of contacts on the list
  • 0-12 mth recency - How many contacts were added in the last 12 mths
  • Hotline - How many contacts were added in the last 0-3 mths (UK) or 0-1 mth (USA)
Description
Provide a brief, unbiased outline of the type of data contained within the list and which sector it is best aimed at, e.g. retail, financial services

Categories
The category best describes the sector the list falls into.
  • Advertisers should select the category by either double clicking on the category name or by highlighting it and then pressing the >> button to the right of the category field. If you select the wrong category then simply press the << button and the category will return to its original field.
  • B2B - within the B2B area the advertiser can select a maximum of 10 categories
  • B2C - within the B2C area the advertiser must select one main category and then a maximum of 10 sub categories
Targets
These are the media channels available for a given list.
  • Postal
  • Telephone
  • SMS
  • Fax
  • Email
For each channel advertisers should provide details of update frequencies and the base rental cost per 1000 contacts. Additional information is required for email and insert lists.

Email
A broadcast list is one where the list owner handles the broadcast on behalf of the user. The number of days required to set up a broadcast list should be given. Bounce back refunds may be available and the refund should be quoted as per '000 bounce backs. All email lists advertised on the DMA List & Insert Manager must be opt-in. Some lists may be double opt-in, this is where the person receiving the email has given their permission to receive such information twice.

Output, Delivery and Other Charges
Output relates to the format the list can be provided on. There is often a surcharge for delivery and this varies according to the method of delivery required and the output format.

The run on charge relates to nett names orders only. In a nett names agreement the user is compensated for the names lost in dedupe. The user agrees with the list owner a percentage of names that will be paid for in full. The remainder is paid at a nominal fee, otherwise known as the run on charge.

Selections
Selections are the different ways in which names and addresses can be selected or targeted by the list buyer in order to pinpoint the correct target audience from a database.

Examples of selections are:
  • Male/female
  • Age
  • Income
  • Geography
  • Job title
A maximum of 20 selections may be shown for each list.
