Nearly half of UK consumers aren’t interested in buying goods through social media sites, a new study suggests.

The study conducted by Havas Media Social and Lightspeed Research reveals that 89% of people have not bought anything through Facebook and 44% are not interested in doing so.

One of the main reasons people are not keen to shop on a social networking site is fear about security, with 65% saying they would only spend between £1 and £50.

However, features like ‘Amazon recommends’ are popular with consumers. 70% of consumers said that targeted advertising based on their shopping behaviour or interests would make them more likely to buy products on social networks.

When it comes to redeeming special offers and vouchers, most consumers prefer to use the brand’s website, rather than Facebook.

This research will be of particular interest to brands that have recently launched Facebook stores. They include French Connection, Asos Bulldog and HMV.
