Facebook has updated its site integrity system in a crackdown on fake Likes on Fan and user pages.
Its site integrity system will automatically detect and delete fake Likes. This includes Likes that come from purchased bulk Likes, malware and hacked accounts.
“When a Page and fan connect on Facebook, we want to ensure that the connection involves a real person interested in hearing from a specific Page and engaging with that brand’s content. As such, we have recently increased our automated efforts to remove Likes on Pages that may have been gained by means that violate our Facebook Terms,” said a Facebook Security blog on Friday 31 August.
Facebook advises brands to beware of suspicious links and vet any business that offers marketing services to build their Facebook presence and “make sure these companies are using legitimate practices, which do not violate the Facebook Terms”.
Facebook has an estimated 83 million fake profiles, according to its latest quarterly report. These fake accounts make up 8.7% of users – 4.8% are duplicates and 3.9% are false accounts.
Facebook estimates that less than 1% of Likes will be removed as a result of this crackdown on fake Likes.
