The 2012 DMA Awards is set to celebrate the best direct marketing campaigns that have capitalised on this summer’s bumper crop of major sporting events.

The one-off Summer of sport category, introduced to recognise the large number of sports-themed campaigns that have accompanied the likes of the European Cup, Wimbledon and the London Olympics, is one of eight new categories to be added to a refreshed 2012 DMA Awards. Other new categories include Best use of social media for brand building, Best use of social media for customer acquisition and Best use of data in a digital campaign.

This year, DMA Awards is challenging agency and brand-side direct marketers to prove the difference their work has made as part of a wider campaign to highlight the social and economic value of direct marketing. Direct marketers now have the chance to compete in 37 categories that champion excellence in different business sectors and media channels.

Iconic Red or Dead founder and renowned British designer Wayne Hemingway MBE is this year’s chair of the DMA Awards judging panel. Hemingway will oversee the rigorous DMA judging process which involves more than 200 industry experts from client companies, suppliers and agencies. He will also lead the final Grand Prix judging process, during which an overall champion is selected from among the Gold winners.

Speaking at the launch of the call for entries, Mark Runacus, chair of the DMA Awards committee, said:

“The creation of the Summer of sport category reflects the need to celebrate the specific work being produced in response to the unique crop of major sporting events we’ve enjoyed these last few months. We’ve also reviewed and refreshed the list of Awards categories to ensure that we represent fully the nature of scope of today’s industry. I would ask anyone that believes that their work makes a difference somehow to enter it into the DMA Awards.”

Agencies and brands have until 7 September to submit their entries. Entries will be judged in October by 200 senior professionals with judging teams comprising copywriters, art directors, data planners, media buyers, planners, clients and sector specialists.

The winners of the 2012 DMA Awards, which is co-sponsored by Mobile Marketing Group and TNT Post, will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ball to be held at Old Billingsgate in the City of London on 4 December.
