Advertising Standards Association

The ASA is the independent, self-regulatory body for non-broadcast advertisements, sales promotions and direct marketing in the UK. They administer the British Code of Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (The CAP Code) to ensure that advertisements are legal, decent, honest and truthful.

Confederation of Paper Industries

The CPI provides a dynamic focus for all sectors of the paper industry to unite, to discuss, and to resolve issues of common interest and to promote a positive image for paper in its many applications.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

DEFRA aims to achieve sustainable development. The Government set out its vision for sustainable waste management in Waste Strategy 2000, the national waste strategy. Department of Trade & Industry – Consumer Gateway

The DTI provides a Consumer Gateway service to inform consumers of their rights when shopping and routes through which to make complaints. The Gateway has links to a variety of websites that provide the answers to various related questions.

DM Authority

The Direct Marketing Authority is an independent body established by the DMA in 1997 to ensure that the direct marketing industry continues to maintain and continually raise its standards.

The Authority investigates any complaints made by consumers and other businesses against DMA member companies to decide if there has been any breach of the DMA's Code of Practice, and makes adjudication as appropriate.

Lets Recycle

Letsrecycle.com is an independent, dedicated website for businesses, local government and community groups involved in recycling and waste management. The site delivers news and material prices plus information for the business sector.

Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee

LARAC is a national local authority organisation promoting waste reduction and recycling. LARAC exchanges and provides information on waste reduction and recycling throughout local government and other organisations, and to the private sector and enquirers.

It aims to promote best practice, and produces training and education materials and publications.

Mailing Preference Service

The MPS allows consumers to register, free of charge, their wish to be removed from up to 95% of direct mail lists in the UK. It helps to ensure that the direct mail consumers receive is welcome mail, while also helping the direct marketing industry to reduce its wastage. This does not include companies with whom a consumer has dealt with in the past, overseas mail or unaddressed mail.

Direct mailers must use this consumer file to clean their lists. This a requirement of DMA membership and of the British Codes of Advertising & Sales Promotion, administered by the Advertising Standards Authority. Research shows that 38% of consumers are aware of the MPS.

Office of the Information Commissioner

The Information Commissioner enforces and oversees the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The Commissioner is a UK independent supervisory authority reporting directly to the UK Parliament and has an international role as well as a national one.

In the UK the Commissioner has a range of duties including the promotion of good information handling and the encouragement of codes of practice for data controllers, that is, anyone who decides how and why personal data is processed.

Royal Mail

Royal Mail has assessed all aspects of their services to reduce their impact on the environment to make mail more sustainable. This link is to the section of their website that covers carbon neutral and responsible addressed and unaddressed mail that is available to businesses that want to reduce their carbon footprint.

Recycle More

Recycle-more was founded in 2000 and offers information on recycling to schools, households and businesses as well as links to other recycling resources. www.recycle-more.co.uk is a Valpak initiative. The site has a unique Recycling Bank Locator, updated by over 450 local authorities, enabling visitors to locate their nearest recycling banks and kerbside information at the touch of a button.
