Pact is an independent, registered charity which supports people affected by imprisonment. Pact provides practical support to prisoners' children and families, and to prisoners themselves. They work to support prisoners and their families to make a fresh start and to minimise the harm that can be caused by imprisonment on offenders, families and communities. Pact works at 17 prisons across the UK. The support they provide includes: family-friendly visitors’ centres, which they run at several prisons across the country; family support workers, who provide advice and support to prisoners and their families at what can be a very stressful time; first night in custody workers, who support new prisoners during their first 72 hours inside, a time when research shows they are most at risk of suicide and self-harm; and the Pact lunch catering service inside prison visiting halls, which offers reasonably priced, healthy food to prisoners and their families, with all proceeds re-invested back into pact’s services. Pact also runs the Basic Caring Communities project, which matches groups of six volunteers with a prisoner approaching the end of their sentence, and provides support throughout the first six months of life on the outside to help prevent reoffending; and the Kinship Care service at HMP Holloway, which supports the carers of children whose mothers are in prison. In addition, pact has set up the JustPeople volunteer hub, which is currently operating in Devon, Cornwall, Manchester and London, and matches trained and vetted volunteers with organisations working in the criminal justice field.”
